A prison (from Old French prisoun) is a place in which people are physically confined and, usually, deprived of a range of personal freedoms. Other terms are penitentiary, correctional facility, and jail (or gaol), although in the United States "jail" and "prison" refer to different subtypes of correctional facility. Jails are conventionally institutions which form part of the criminal justice system of a county and house both inmates awaiting trial and convicted misdemeanants. Prisons form part of the criminal justice system of a state and only house convicted felons, usually for longer periods of time than jails. (The U.S. Federal Government also has a system of jails and prisons). Imprisonment or incarceration is a legal penalty that may be imposed by the state for the commission of a crime.

A criminal suspect who has been charged with or is likely to be charged with criminal offense may be held on remand in prison if he is denied or unable to meet conditions of bail, or is unable or unwilling to post bail. A criminal defendant may also be held in prison while awaiting trial or a trial verdict. If found guilty, a defendant will be convicted and may receive a custodial sentence requiring imprisonment.

As well as convicted or suspected criminals, prisons may be used for internment of those not charged with a crime. Prisons may also be used as a tool of political repression to detain political prisoners, prisoners of conscience, and "enemies of the state", particularly by authoritarian regimes. In times of war or conflict, prisoners of war may also be detained in prisons. A prison system is the organizational arrangement of the provision and operation of prisons, and depending on their nature, may invoke a corrections system. Although people have been imprisoned throughout history, they have also regularly been able to perform prison escapes.

What jobs are there in uk prisons and how much do they pay?
Q. What jobs are there in uk prisons and how much do they pay?

A. The basic pay is low, and therefore attracts those of low morals, intelligence, and high suceptibility to corruption. A good earning can be made from drug dealing, as most uk prisons have a better drug supply chain than the streets, or from acting as stooge for mr big on E wing. I once went for a job in the service (the media dept, so not stricly officer role, far from it) but even so, for a department of the service, they were so far up thier own ar.se.s with political correct'ness and b.sh.it it was unreal. No wonder the systems in a mess. They really are a mad, incompetent lot. they say, "if you cant DO, then teach" (it) and for the prision service, if you cant do, run, understand, or manage it, than hey ..welcome.

What are your opinions on conjugal visits in prisons?
Q. Do you think conjugal visits in prisons should be allowed or not in all states? Why do you think they should be allowed or not allowed? I think they should be allowed. People in prison's are in there for a reason that is true but I don't think they should punish their spouces for it. It's not hurting anyone to allow it, and it releases tension and it's not only a good thing for the inmates but their spouse as well. Just so everyone knows, NO my man is not in prison. I saw a web site with lots of petitions for it, and I just wanted to see what other people think about it.

A. The purpose of family visits is not sex... it is to maintain family ties, which are proven to be a key factor in the success rate of an inmates rehabilitation. I feel very strongly that there should be provisions for family visits in every prison for any inmate who qualifies. Getting approved for family visits is not easy- there are some very strict guidelines that must be met by both the inmate and the family members wishing to visit, so it is not as if making them available in every facility is going to result in some huge change... except in the focus and attitude of the inmates. Family visits are of great benefit to an inmates children, they offer a chance for some normal family interaction and that has been shown to promote the parent/ [cont.]
